The Musicians:
Adam Gallant (trumpet) earned a Bachelor of Music degree in music education and a Master of Arts degree in music studies from the University of New Hampshire. He performs regularly with the Portsmouth Symphony, Symphony by the Sea, Maine State Ballet, UNH Theatre and Dance, New England Brass, and the UNH faculty brass quintet. Adam is currently the Equipment Manager, Music Librarian, and Assistant Outreach Coordinator for the University of New Hampshire Music Department. He is also the trumpet instructor at the Cooperative Middle School in Stratham, New Hampshire.
John Cardin (trumpet) received his Bachelor of Music in Music Education from the University of New Hampshire, and earned his Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Southern New Hampshire University. He regularly performs as a soloist throughout southern New Hampshire, and with the Portsmouth Symphony, the Portsmouth Brassworks Quintet, and the studio rock orchestra, Telergy. Mr. Cardin serves as Director of Instrumental Music at Laconia Middle School, percussion instructor for the high school marching band, and President of the Lakes Region Junior High Music Festival. Outside of music, he pursues a diverse array of passions, from computers and gaming, to tennis, weightlifting and photography.
Tracey Crain (horn) is a recent graduate of the University of New Hampshire. She received her master's degree in Special Education and is currently teaching at the Mary C. Dondero Elementary School in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Tracey also received her bachelor's degree from UNH in horn performance as a student of Kendall Betts and Hazel Dean Davis. During her undergrad she performed as the principal horn for the UNH Wind Symphony, Symphony Orchestra, and Ambrassadors Brass Quintet. Tracey is a recent addition to the Portsmouth Symphony having joined the orchestra in the fall of 2017.
Mark W. Schneider (tenor trombone) began playing and studying music in 5th grade after many years listening to his mother's collection of jazz greats and musicals on 78 rpm records. He studied with members of the Stamford, New Haven, Harford (CT), and Springfield (MA) orchestras, as well as with jazz trombone great Sonny Costanzo, and taught brass instruments privately for many years. He is currently principal trombonist with the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra for almost 20 years, and performs with local jazz/dance bands, and loves to perform in the pit for musicals.
Jim Griswold (bass trombone) loves performing with the Portsmouth Symphony and the PSO Brass Quintet. He has played bass 'bone since the early 1970s with a 20 year hiatus for work and living that took him overseas and other places that were not conducive to playing. He worked as a groundwater geologist for more than 30 years and now lives in Lee where he farms elk, chickens, Asian pear, trout and anything else that can sell at local farmers markets in the Seacoast area.
Crystal Carr (tuba) switched from flute to tuba in the eighth grade and never looked back. In 2008, she began subbing in the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra, which she continues today. Crystal also occasionally plays with the New Hampshire Philharmonic, Kearsarge Community Band, Phillips Exeter Academy, and just about any ensemble that will have her. Currently, she works as a Marketing Specialist in Claremont, New Hampshire. Other activities include teaching private lessons, snuggling her dogs, and losing arguments with her parrot.
The PSO Brass Quintet is comprised of key brass players from the Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra. The ensemble was founded by Adam Gallant in the fall of 2016 and is dedicated to performing serious brass chamber music at the highest level. PSO Brass has performed recently on the seacoast in Portsmouth, Kittery, Newington, and Durham. In February 2018 they gave their debut recital at South Church in Portsmouth, featuring the works of Stravinsky, Gabrieli, Bach, Dahl, and Bernstein. The quintet is available for weddings, church services, education concerts, graduation ceremonies, and any other occasion calling for brass music.
