The theme for the 2020 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration is Rise Together! In times of change, struggles, anger, oppression and loss of national unity, it is easy to lose hope and optimism. As I listen to the news, talk to family, friends and colleagues, I sense a loss of optimism. Difficult times, while frightening and exhausting, are not the times to lose hope and optimism. I suggest they are the times to inspire each other to reach out to our neighbors, even those we disagree with, and push for positive change. I suggest during the days of celebrating the life and works of Dr. King and the millions who worked with him, that we pull each other up, push each other along, and when needed, carry each other to a place of compassion, kindness, equity and peace. It is only in our willingness to help all others rise that we will rise ourselves. We hope you will join us at some of the wonderful programs taking shape now for the 2020 Celebration. As we come together in January and throughout the year, let us Rise Together as a community, a nation, a world.
